Primeurs de Bordeaux: Haut-Médoc & Médoc 2021
By Sylvain Patard: editor in chief, posted on 30 May 2022
These two extensive appellations cover almost the entire peninsula. By definition, they embrace fundamentally different configurations, with very distinctive vintage variation. We have been extremely selective in our choice of wines in a bid to only present the finest examples – at this stage – of a challenging vintage.
Haut-Médoc & Médoc 2021
Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnel
Haut-Médoc
90/100 Château Cambon La Pelouse: Nose of ripe red fruits with very strong oak influence. The palate shows a similarly massive profile. This is a wine with lots of extraction and very strong oakiness which will be successful in the future.
90/100 Château Charmail: Ripe cherries on the nose. Ample palate which is very sappy with chiselled fruit. Ripe tannin presence with well-judged oak. All-set for a great future.
Margaux
91/100 Château Paveil de Luze: Beautiful fusion of fruit and oak on the nose. The wine has a palate to match, with lovely weight and pleasant, mouth-caressing tannins. An elegant offering, obviously with its future in the making.
Saint-Estèphe
92/100 Château Le Crock: Delicate nose with harmonious fruit and oak accents. Racy, dense palate with stellar quality oak and clean fruit on the finish. A very successful wine in this vintage.
91/100 Château Le Boscq: Concentrated nose, still oak-driven and quite elegant. Beautiful density from point of entry, with fresh tannins and ripe fruit. A very promising, full-bodied offering.
Crus Bourgeois Supérieurs
Moulis en Médoc
92/100 Château Caroline: Pronounced toasted, smoky oak on the nose. After airing, the fruit establishes its place, in a juicy, jammy style. The palate is dense and ample with good balance between the freshness of the fruit, precise tannins and noble oak influence. A successful effort.
Saint-Estèphe
92/100 Château de Côme: Delicate smoky, toasted oakiness on the nose with beautiful ripe fruit presence. Good suppleness on the palate. Elegant fruit, moderate tannins and mouth-coating oaky freshness. A gratifying, accessible wine driven by freshness.
Crus Bourgeois
Pauillac
90/100 Château Plantey: Intense nose with elegant oakiness. The same oaky overtones carry over to the palate in a racy style with incredible length already on the finish.
Saint-Estèphe
91/100 Château Tour de Pez: Intense fruitiness on the nose with very crunchy ripe redcurrant notes. Fresh, fruity palate with oak presence that does not overshadow the other components. The same vibrant fruitiness recurs on the finish. Very successful.
